By far the most popular work of Jagadamba Prasad Mishra “Hiteishi”- as far as I know. One of my favourite lines from this poem that attracts me and several other Hindi-Lovers to the author. These words are a tribute to our soldiers who immortalize themselves while serving the nation.
These heart-touching lines praising our brave martyrs are inscribed on the pedestal of the obelisk at the National War Memorial in India Gate lawns.
These always made me wonder what the complete poem looks like and what are the sentiments that the author wants to share. The poem has a much deeper meaning.
Here is the complete poem:
English Translation- Nisu:
On the pyres of Martyrs – By Jagadamba Prasad Mishra “Hiteishi”
India will once be on the heights of success.
Free from shackles, will be our home.
Will teach a lesson to the gardeners who destroyed the flowers.
Springs shall arrive the moment when we are our own gardener.
These occasional tussles are no good, O murderer with a dagger!
When would this conclude between us?
Never depart from my side- O my grieved nation.
Don’t know after death, where would I be and where would you be.
We’ll see who (passes and) saves the nation’s honour.
Have heard – today we are to be tested on the Warfield.
On the pyres of the martyrs, carnivals will be held each year.
These will be the last (remembrance) insignia for the ones who die for the nation.
A day would come when there’d be our rule.
When the land would be ours and also the skies.
